In which we learn that I stole a car

Any man who knows all the answers most likely misunderstood the questions.”
--Anonymous

I think I’m kind of insulting myself with that quote…

Hey, everyone! I’m back with another Q&A session. Ready?

Dominique asked: If the entire world were coming to an end and you were about to morph into space with your best friend to save both of your lives and you could only bring one thing with you, what would it be and why?

I’m going to answer this one a little tricksy. I can leave with my best friend (who just so happens to be the hubby) and take one thing with me—so I’m going to send my hubby, replace myself with one of my sons and have my other son be the “one thing” to take with me. Or not with me, as it were. I’d stay behind and watch the three most important things to me escape their doom. And I’d call it a good deal. =]

C.K. Bryant asked: What one decision did you make, right or wrong, that you wish you knew the results or consequences of before you made it?

Hands down: taking *cough* my older sister’s car and wrecking it. Sorry Sneck. =P (Yeah, I only had a learner’s permit at the time. Truthfully, I was lucky to have lived—and I don’t mean because of the wreck. ;)

M. Gray asked: What books and movies have influenced your writing the most?

The first books that come to mind as influencing my writing the most are The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, Dragonsong by Anne McCaffery, and The Dark Horse series by Mary H. Herbert. These books, combined, gave me the inspiration to write my first book at 14. I revisit them every year and remember that first, tiny glow in my heart. It never fails to reignite my passion. It is a tragedy to me that I will never get to tell Mr. Jordan, in person, what his books did for me. (And in case you can’t tell, my genre is totally fantasy.)

As for movies, I’m inspired by movies that make me think or that have great character appeal. I tend to like the darker, grittier characters but I love all kinds of movies.

And the last Q of the day is from Windy A., who asked: When are we having lunch?

When you feel better, my friend. =D

That’s it for today. If you have any questions you’d like to ask me, feel free to do so in the comments (or you can email me to the address listed in the sidebar). My question of the day for you is stolen from Mary:

What Movies/Books inspire you?

All my best,
L.T.

Can I come to that lunch too?

I love learning more about you! Jordan's books inspired me too, as did McCaffrey. I haven't heard of the other series you mentioned though.

And I would add Ender's Game to my list.

Ha! Those car antics are nothing! Remember that time I hot wired that BMW and rode all the way into Mexico... Those were good times... Either that or I'm mixing up movies with real life again...

You stole a car and wrecked it? See I knew your life wasn't boring. Memoir Laura - go for it. I've never read any of those fantasy books - I need to check them out.

LOL, thanks for making me laugh with the car anecdote.

Anne McCaffrey was a huge influence to me when I was younger, but as I got older, Anne Rice was more my speed. Now that she's all crazy (sorry, AR, love ya anyway), I get my writerly inspiration from Suzanne Collins and Scott Westerfeld.

Movies that inspire me? Everything from Miyazaki to Tarantino. I take inspiration wherever I can find it. ;)

I once hit the corner of a brick mailbox with my parents car, before I had a license. The mailbox cracked, but did not break, and the car was an old metal beast, that did not get damaged. Thank goodness for that! :)

Wow, glad you survived the car incident! Your answer to the 1st question is the same as mine would be, save my dh and 2 sons.

Life is an odd classroom, ain't it? Thanks for letting us peek into yours.

So sorry you crashed your sister's car. I have serious guilt issues, so I'd forever be haunted by that, too!

Thanks for answering my question. Sometimes I wish I were stranded on a desert island just so I could read Jordan's series. Everyone who reads it raves about it.

Darker and grittier characters, eh? My latest novel is so dark and now I'm wondering if it's too dark for the LDS market but not dirty enough for the national market. Eek! Maybe I'll get some answers at the storymakers conference.

I'm snickering about the car...somehow I can't imagine you doing that. :)

Fun answers! And I highly doubt you have misunderstood the questions in this case.

That's it! I'm driving tomorrow. j/k. I never knew you wrecked your sister's car. =) I ran into our fence pole a few years ago. So embarrassing.

I love the movie Les Mis. So good, very inspirational!

Oh wow, I cut my teeth on Robert Jordan, too. So, so good. Movies? Hands down, The Shawshank Redemption. Best movie I've ever seen.

You have me thinking... I love all genres but my most inspiring movies would have to be (and these are SO indicative of what I write): You've Got Mail, While You Were Sleeping, Charade, Bringing Up Baby, Last of the Mohicans, Far and Away, Shakespeare In Love, (and not so indicative) One Flew over the Cukoo's Nest, Braveheart, LotR, Saving Private Ryan...

I'm not even going to try to list books.

You are made of awesomeness, and I'm glad your sister let you live. :p

Yay for fantasy!

I love getting to know more about you! Now I get to tease you about wrecking a car when you only had your permit. Wait. I've done that too. Dangitall.

Ooh! That reminds me of a time when we took Houdini's dad's van out for a joy ride, and then backed into a street sign! Bent the bumber into a nice V shape. We abandoned the street pole, drove to the elementary up the street (that had the big solid wall up against a hillside in the parking lot). We backed into the wall in an attempt to straighten the bumper... which did more damage to the wall than to the car.

I hate to say it, but I've never read Anne McCaffery. I know, I should be spanked.
:)

Books that inspire me:

Here are just a few (there are so very many!!)

Anything Ray Bradbury

Ender's Game

Anything Terry Pratchett (I blame Kim for my recent infatuation with Pratchett! and now the condition is spreading to my husband...it's not a bad thing, though, really)

Best to you, too, girl.

LOL! I love this feature. I learn so many cool things about you from the questions.

In my most impressionable years I was influenced by Anne of Green Gables and Little Women. I read and reread those ones, loving those girls over and over again.

Yay for the Wheel of Time!! I think I've read all of those books about four times now. One of these days I'll have to do a Q&A, they seem like fun. :)

I think I want to borrow Windy's question. When are we getting together or having lunch?

Also, I gave you an award on my blog today. Come see!

Hi Laura! You're such a fun and interesting person! I love how you present yourself in all things! :)

Great answers. How funny that you wrecked your sister's car. Though I bet it wasn't funny at the time!

Thanks for the confession :) So many great movies out there. I can't eve think of just one that inspires me the most. Green Mile, The pursuit of happiness... even kids movies like Up and Wall-E :)

First and foremost I would like to set the record straight... I actually didn't even notice the damage to the car but was initially blamed. And I was never the one you needed to worry about killing you - that would be good old M&D, but mostly M....

Furthermore, I'd have to go with "For Love of the Game" for my movie. You know I'm a sucker for anything baseball.

And finally, "The Agony and the Ecstasy" by Irving Stone for my book. I truly believe this book altered my life forever (I know it's so totally corny, but LT can tell you it's true)
